THE AUDO: WHERE DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION?
KSL: We employ different approaches from project to project but retrospectively, as a design duo, we often work within a specific historical context to collect inspiration and determine the core of a problem. Later on in our process, we bring materials into the picture to explore their functionality with simplicity in mind.
TA: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PIECES?
KSL: Aluminium and solid wooden furniture that combines traditional craftsmanship with modern industrial production. The bespoke, crafted details in our works give each piece a distinctive figure.
TA: COULD YOU LET US IN ON YOUR WORK PROCESS?
KSL: All of our designs arise from mutual collaboration. We never just sit and draw concepts individually. In some cases, a design may originate from the discovery of an interesting material or concept, which we then develop through a joint creative dialogue. We are, therefore, always proud to have both of our names on everything we produce.
TA: IN YOUR OPINION, WHY DO PEOPLE FIND SIMPLICITY SO APPEALING?
KSL: Most people have an understanding of the concept of minimalism, however, design can also be too minimal. Simplicity, on the other hand, is something a little different. We believe that it is essential that our work encourages users to look a little closer – carefully studying each piece to reveal its subtle yet attractive crafted details.
The construction of our furniture also plays an integral role in its design. When pairing contrasting materials such as aluminium and wood, the simple construction of our pieces helps to enhance their juxtaposition.
TA: COULD YOU PLEASE DESCRIBE THE CONCEPT BEHIND THE COLLECTION?
KSL: The collection concept arose from an investigation into the relationship between unconventional pairings, such as aluminium and solid walnut wood. Building upon previous compositions and experiments, including our recent Glyptoteket exhibition “Why Are You Angry?” we set out to explore the connection between differing materials.
TA: WHICH PART OF YOUR JOB DO YOU FIND THE MOST CHALLENGING?
KSL: We always strive to work with courage and naivety. Our driving force lies in our creativity which, in itself, can pose plenty of challenges.
TA: HOW DOES YOUR COLLECTION RELATE TO THE INTERIOR DESIGN CONCEPT OF THE AUDO?
KSL: Our “Figure Collection” is a limited series of furniture which reflects many of the carefully curated works of art and vintage design objects surrounding us at The Audo.
